Graded stakes-placed JERRY THE NIPPER (Liam’s Map) figures to be well supported for the 41st Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup (G1-Bar) on March 2 at the Garrison Savannah. The New York-bred earner of over $544,000 was recently purchased by Gay Smith for the Gold Cup from Repole Stable. Todd Pletcher has been training Jerry the Nipper, who turned seven years old this year.
Post positions for the Gold Cup were drawn Thursday morning and Jerry the Nipper landed post nine in the nine-horse field.
The big bay gelding has placed in seven stakes races and won six of 21 starters. He was an unlucky third in the Grade 3 Fort Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream Park in December and recently chased a hot pace in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf and faded to ninth, 4 1/2 lengths behind winner Warm Heart.
Champion jockey PATRICK HUSBANDS, who hails from Barbados and Ontario, is expected to ride Jerry the Nipper. Husbands has won the Gold Cup four times.
Smith, who has won the Gold Cup three times, also purchased PORTFOLIO COMPANY (Kitten’s Joy) from Klaravich Stable. The six-year-old has been stakes placed four times and he has earned over $359,000. He was recently a closing fifth in a handicap at Gulfstream on the Tapeta. Chad Brown has been training Portfolio Company, who was bred by Ken Ramsey and the late Sarah Ramsey.
Ramsey, a three-time winner of the Gold Cup, has a host of possible entrants for the Gold Cup, which is ‘about’ 1 1/8 miles on the turf on a left handed course. He entered CASH EQUITY (Fr) (Toronado), a grey horse who closed fast to be third in the Tapeta handicap that Portfolio Company was in. A deep closer Cash Equity is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. Ramsey and Joseph also have SPY NOVEL (Boisterous) in the race and he recently came off a layoff and finished a good second in a 1 3/8 mile turf allowance race at Gulfstream.
Coolmore Stakes (G1-Bar) winner PAT’SEWINGMACHINE, yet another runner bred by the Ramseys, comes in for the new Fun in the Sun Racing syndicate headed by Darwin Clarke of Washington state. Pat’ssewingmachine, by We Miss Artie, was brought down from Woodbine by trainer Ted Holder.
Sir David Seale has won a record 8 Gold Cups and has his trusty handicap horse RENAISANCE FROLIC in the field along with speedster BRILLIANT NEWS, who is also entered in the Spa Sprint on Gold Cup day. SO SUAVE (Ire), consistently good in Barbados since coming from Woodbine, and BODIE TAP, complete the field.
The Gold Cup is race 8 and entries can be found at the Barbados Turf Club website.
