Judy the Beauty, bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, captured the $1-million Filly and Mare Sprint on Saturday’s 31st Breeders’ Cup World Championships, at Santa Anita Park, in Arcadia, California.
Owned and trained by Wes Ward, the five-year-old Ghostzapper-Holy Blitz chestnut held off the late rally of Better Lucky for a head score. Leigh Court, owned and bred by Canadian Eugene Melnyk and trained by Josie Carroll, finished fifth under Gary Boulanger.
The Juvenile Fillies was won by long shot Take Charge Brandi as Conquest Eclipse, trained by Mark Casse, finished seventh, while Majestic Presence, co-owned by Glen Todd of North American Thoroughbred Horse Company, finished ninth.
Irish Mission, an Ontario-bred multiple Sovereign Award winner, faded to 11th in the Filly and Mare Turf which was captured by Dayatthespa.
American-bred Bobby’s Kitten, third in the Woodbine Mile, won the Turf Sprint. John Menary’s Something Extra, trained by Gail Cox and ridden by Eurico Rosa da Silva, finished 10th after pressing the early pace.
In the $2-million Juvenile, Private Prospect, ridden by Woodbine-based Jesse Campbell, and Blue Dancer, based in Western Canada, under jockey Rico Walcott were prominent early but faded to ninth and tenth respectively as U.S-based Texas Red romped.
Japanese-bred Karakontie captured the $2-million Mile with a flourish by a length in front of Irish-bred Anodin who was a length better than Ricoh Woodbine Mile champ Trade Storm. Grand Arch, based at Woodbine for trainer Brian Lynch, landed in 11th position while Kaigun, co-owned by Toronto native Harvey Swartz and ridden by Patrick Husbands for trainer Mark Casse, settled for 10th.
