Toronto, ON – Multiple Sovereign Award-winning jockey Todd Kabel has decided to sit out the rest of the 2008 racing season due to weight issues.
Kabel, who has six Top Rider Sovereigns and one Top Apprentice honour, rode in 53 races this year, winning four and posting 15 top-three finishes.
“He’s hung it up for the year,” said John Bell, Kabel’s long-time agent. “His weight problem, he just couldn’t keep his weight down to the level he wanted.”
The native of McCreary, Manitoba, who began his riding career in 1984, has won 3,168 races, including 307 stakes, 67 graded.
Kabel has won the Queen’s Plate twice, in 1995 with Regal Discovery and in 2000 with Scatter The Gold.
Last year, the 42-year-old won 10 Woodbine stakes and partnered champion three-year-old male Alezzandro to victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes.
