The 2026 Keeneland January Horses of Racing Age sale in Lexington, Kentucky wrapped up after two sessions and the auction realized total sales for 700 horses of $53,580,300 — including $2,346,500 in post-sale receipts reported to date for horses that did not meet their reserve prices in the ring but sold afterward — to record the highest gross for the auction since 2008. At last year’s three-day January Sale, Keeneland sold 724 horses for $35,225,900 (including post-sales) for an average of $48,655 and a median of $22,000.
Monday’s opening session of the January Sale featured Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm spending the sale-topping amount of $3.2 million for Tiffany Case, dam of Canadian champion and Eclipse Award finalist Nitrogen and in foal to Not This Time; Greg Tramontin’s Greenwell Thoroughbreds going to $2 million to acquire Grade 1 winner and broodmare prospect Simply in Front (read more here); and a yearling by Gun Runner selling for $800,000 to Marc Gunderson’s MWG.
King’s Plate winner MANSETTI, offered as a racing or stallion prospect, was bought back by Al and Bill Ulwelling for $385,000.
There were numerous purchases by Canadians during the sale and DALE DESRUISSEAUX was one of the busier ones, picking up a $30,000 short yearling filly by Annapolis for Maureen Hewitt-Topp. Desruisseaux also bought yearlings by Loggins, Bucchero, Maximus Mischief, Speaker’s Corner and a broodmare prospect by Jackie’s Warrior.
SAINTSBURY FARM of Jay and Christine Hayden paid $155,000 for GUN D’ORO, a Medaglia d’Oro mare in foal to Arabian Knight and BARRY ARNASON bought the Speightstown mare EXCELLENT QUESTION in foal to Beau Liam.
ANDERSON FARMS (David Anderson) bought two mares, MERRY AND BRIGHT, by Hard Spun, in foal to Proxy, for $45,000 and SUGAR HI, a racing or broodmare prospect by Twirling Candy, for $25,000.
TALL OAKS FARM of Ivan and Colleen Dalos bought a short yearling colt by Speaker’s Corner for $35,000 and CAL BRITTON bought two short yearlings by Jimmy Creed and Global Campaign.
