ONE STRIPE (SAf), who defeated older horses in the L’ORMARIN KING’S PLATE (G1) at Kenilworth in South Africa in January, is headed to Woodbine for the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile next Saturday, September 14.

Purchased in part by Hollywood Syndicate from Rakesh Sewgoolam, One Stripe has won six of nine races in his homeland.

He already has a berth in the Breeders’ Cup MIle (G1) thanks to his King’s Plate win.

The son of One World is now based at trainer Graham Motion’s Fair Hill Training Centre in Maryland. One Stripe was in the care of trainer Vaughan Marshall, with his CV including sensational victories in the Hollywoodbets Gr1 Cape Guineas as well as the  L’Ormarins Gr1 King’s Plate from only nine starts, for career earnings of close on R4,2-million.

The $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile on November 1 at Del Mar will be One Stripe’s main target this year and the Woodbine Mile will be used to set the bay colt up for that championship event.

The Hollywood Syndicate is the name of the group owned by bookmaker Hollywoodbets that currently owns a number of Thoroughbred race horses in South Africa.

One Stripe will be racing for the first time since March when he had a disastrous run in the Big Cap. From TurfTalk.co.za:

One Stripe’s swansong in South Africa turned into a nightmare at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth yesterday as Gavin Lerena found his path down the inside rail blocked by The Grey King who was forced inwards by eventual winner All Out For Six (Grant Van Niekerk) at the 200m pole. Whether One Stripe was going as well as All Out For Six at that stage is open to conjecture, but Champions often find a way of snatching unlikely victories under pressure, and One Stripe, who was severely checked, was denied that opportunity.

By the exciting young sire One World, One Stripe is from a stakes-winning mare, Silver Stripe (SAf) (by Silvano (Ger). His second dam, Badger’s Gift (SAf) was a Group 1 winner of over $700,000 and her sire was Badger Land, the Flamingo Stakes winner for D. Wayne Lukas and company in 1986.

Of the nominees for the Woodbine Mile who are expected to company, NOTABLE SPEECH, a Group 1 winner from Godolphin and Charlie Appleby, would be favoured if he does compete. Last year’s Mile winner, WIN IT FOR THE MONEY will try and double up for Mark Casse and Canadian champion MY BOY PRINCE could also take another shot at the Mile.

Local stakes stars GAS ME UP and CRUDEN BAY could also compete.
