One of Canada’s top two-year-olds of 2024 and a contender for this year’s King’s Plate, SCORCHING, will begin his three-year-old campaign in the March 1 Gotham Mile (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. The Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch-owned colt has been in New York at Belmont racetrack training since the beginning of the new year with John Charalambous.
Any thoughts that the Ontario-bred by Mo Town might have a soft spot to try the dirt track for the first time went out the window when the entries came out for the one-turn, one-mile race. Scorching drew the rail inside of nine rivals which includes four unbeaten colts. Scorching, winner of the Simcoe stakes at seven furlongs on Tapeta with an 80 Beyer Figure, last ran in the Cup and Saucer Stakes on turf, was a close second and placed first, also earning an 80 Beyer.
Eric Cancel will ride the Huntington Stud Farm-bred.
A pair of unbeaten New York-breds will be tough customers in the Gotham. SACROSANCT, trained by Brad Cox, is four-for-four with three New York-bred stakes wins and SAND DEVIL is three-for-three with a 90 and 93 Beyer in his last two outings.
CHAD BROWN sends up debut winner GARAMOND for Juddmonte Farm from Florida and Paulo Lobo has debut winner PAGODE entered, a runner from Turfway.
The Gotham is race 8 next Saturday with a post time of 4:18 Eastern.
