Lapsang won a stretch duel with Dulcify to capture Saturday’s $114,800 Deputy Jane West Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Suzanne Drake for owners Janice and Joseph Pollard, Silver Duck Racing Stable and Philip Yu, Lapsang rallied four-wide for the stretch run and finished gamely to notch a narrow neck score in the inaugural running of the six furlong ‘Poly’ stake for two-year-old fillies.
Questera broke running under Justin Stein, but Dulcify, with Eurico Rosa da Silva up, split rivals down the backstretch to notch an opening quarter in :23.36.
Tyler Pizarro pushed Enoree into action through the turn, emerging with a precarious one-length lead at the top of the lane, with Lapsang, rallying strongly under Omar Moreno, hot on their heels.
Enoree was quickly overtaken by Lapsang who then held off a stubborn Dulcify to emerge victorious, stopping the clock in 1:10.84.
Lapsang, a grey daughter of Smoke Glacken, notched a smart debut score in an August 31 maiden allowance event.
“Today, she was a little hesitant to be up front, but it seemed like she had a lot of horse left so I wasn’t too panicky about it,” said Moreno.
Lapsang, bred in Ontario by Sedgefield Farm, banked $75,600 in victory while remaining undefeated through two career starts.
She returned $3 and $2.20, pairing with Dulcify ($2.80) for an $8.20 (2-3) exactor. There was no show wagering. Ria Antonia was scratched.
