Jockey LUIS CONTRERAS, a two-time winner of the Woodbine Oaks, will partner BA DEE YAH in next Saturday’s big race for Canadian bred three-year-old fillies. The Oaks will be run for the 69th time and it is 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta.
Ba Dee Yah, who has never raced at Woodbine or on an all-weather surface, is coming into Ontario Monday for Gold Standard Racing of Bill and Mary Stone of Connecticut. Trainer Tom Amoss, who won the Nijinsky Stakes in 2006 with Rush Bay, has won over 4,000 races including the Kentucky Oaks (G1). Amoss is also an accomplished television commentator.
Bill Stone, founder and CEO of SS & C Technologies, is a billionaire born in Indiana. His wife Mary, also from Indiana, named Ba Dee Yah, a daughter of Uncle Mo bred by Anderson Farms, for the Earth Wind and Fire song ‘September’.
EMMA-JAYNE WILSON will ride WAR PAINTER for trainer Kevin Attard and the Canuck Racing Club. War Painter could vie for favouritism as she comes off a win, was a stakes winner last year and has been working impressively.
Attard also has MY GIRL DELLA in the Oaks for John Fielding and PATRICK HUSBANDS rides her. She is also an Anderson Farms-bred and she was fourth in an allowance race last time. VUCHELLA, another Anderson bred, will have Pietro Moran on board and she has been second or third in her last three races while still a maiden.
Kevin could have two other fillies in the Oaks to make an army of five: Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner INUDATION, owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, and recent winner CAITLINHERGRTNESS, from WinStar and Siena Farms, LLC.
Chiefswood Stables’ KIN’S CONCERTO is a contender although she has yet to cross the finish line in first place. The Josie Carroll trainee has been second and third in all four races but was placed first in her debut last fall when the winner was disqualified.
HURRICANE CLAIR will get attention as she is a stakes winner and just won a two-turn race on turf. The Silent Name (Jpn) filly was bred by Helen Bruno’s Bru-Mel Stables and is owned by Albertans David Robotham, Rodney Carpenter and Tony Boogmans.
Sahin Civaci rides.
