There is a super card of racing set for Fair Grounds in Louisiana for Saturday, March 21 including the Louisiana Derby (G2), a $1 million race for 3-year-olds, a race that was set to prepare horses for the Kentucky Derby (G1), now postponed until September.

Racing has been continuing in the U.S. in New York, Florida, Louisiana, California and a few other places with measures in place to not allow the public on site.

But Aqueduct racetrack in New York suspended racing yesterday after a backstretch worker tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Gulfstream Park has cancelled racing for today (Friday)  to “to update its protocols in a number of areas, including the Jockeys’ Room. Racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday, March 21.”

Speaking of jockeys, Irad Ortiz, one of the world’s leading riders, has stopped riding, as has Rajiv Maragh.

The incredible events at Oaklawn Park that began Saturday have certainly turned the racing, and sports world, upside down.

Last Saturday, during the racing, NFL coach Sean Payton appeared in the winner’s circle; he had been invited to the races and not only was he surrounded by people, but the racing channel TVG actually sent a reporter to interview him:

Sean Payton tested positive for COVID-19 the following day. It would be remarkable if Oaklawn continued racing.

California governor Gavin Newsome laid down a ‘stay at home’ mandate on Thursday and how that will affect racing at Santa Anita is a major question.

The Louisiana Derby is set to go at 5:49 p.m. and has a big field of sophomores:
