A gelding by Kentucky Bear from the Woodbine stakes-winning mare Midnight Shadow (by Trajectory) topped the CTHS Manitoba Yearling Sale on August 21 at the Red River Exhibition Grounds in Winnipeg.

Consigned by Kelly Halliday, the yearling was bought for $25,000 by Gary Naherniak.  The 2-year-old full brother to the sales topper, I Love My Life, recently won the $40,000 CTHS Sales Stakes, and an older half-brother, Langara, was a multiple stakes winner of over $250,000.

Kentucky Bear, a son of Mr, Greeley, stands at Ziprick Thoroughbreds in Russell.

Cam and Sherisse Ziprick, perennial leading breeders and consignors in the province, sold their last crop of yearlings and last foals by their coveted stallion GOING COMMANDO at this year’s sale. In fact, the last Going Commando in the sale, a filly from the Broken Vow mare Talkn Til Midnight, was the highest-priced filly and second highest price of the sale at $20,000.

The bay, purchased by Arnason Farms, is from four-time winner Talkn Til Midnight, who hails from the family of Grade 1 winner Chaposa Springs.

Another offspring of Kentucky Bear, a gelding from the Going Commando mare She’s Regal, sold for $17,000 to Kevin Gill. Also bringing a final bid of $17,000 was a filly by Going Commando from the Ziprick team who sold to A2 Thoroughbreds.

The 2022 sale saw 17 yearlings sell for a gross of $170,150, down from the 2021 gross of $209,800 for 22 sold but the average price was up to $10,008, bettering last year’s average of $9,536.
