Canada’s Horse of the Year MIGHTY HEART is on the road this weekend, heading to West Virginia and Mountaineer Racetrack for the $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Cup (G3)  at 1 1/6 miles on the dirt. Larry Cordes’ Canadian hero is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes at Woodbine July 1 and, since the next older horse race at Woodbine on the Tapeta is not until mid-September, he is seeking some action.

Trained by Josie Carroll, Mighty Heart is 3-to-1 and second favourite in the seven-horse Governor’s Cup, which is race seven on a stakes-laden card at Mountaineer. He starts from post five and Daisuke Fukumoto is named to ride.

The favourite is SPRAWL, the Claiborne Farms and Adele Dilschneider colt who was third by a head to Mighty Heart in the Blame stakes and recently third in the Grade Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

Sprawl shortens up from two nine-furlong races which helps his chances and he also may really move up if all the rain forecasted for the area around Mountaineer materializes. There is a 100 percent chance of rain there on Saturday. Sprawl won on a sloppy track race at Churchill Downs by more than seven lengths in May. Mighty Heart has never raced in the slop.

The Governor’s Cup goes off at approximately 4:55 p.m.
