MISS SPEEDY has come a long way since her debut win at Woodbine in July 2021. The beautiful dark bay mare, now five years old, returned to the stakes winner’s circle on June 24 with a dominating win in the $100,000 Ballade Stakes for Ontario-sired fillies and mares at 6 furlongs.
Returned to Woodbine and Tapeta in May by trainer Mark Casse, Miss Speedy was hammered down as the big favourite in the Ballade despite the presence of the 2022 Ballade winner Artie’s Princess. It was smart money as Miss Speedy, under jockey Sahin (The Turk) Civaci, stalked the front-running Ol Blondie, a Paul Buttigieg trainee in red-hot form, before taking off to a 2 3/4 length win in 1:09.07. Miss Speedy, owned by Gary Barber, paid $4.90 to win.
Longshots Gamble’s Silver, trained by Josie Carroll for Ivan Dalos, and Piano Bar Stables’ Talk to Ya Later, trained by Ian Black, filled the triactor.
Bred by Linda Mason, Miss Speedy was one of five gals in the field by Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie), one of Canada’s top stallions. Miss Speedy was bought at the 2019 CTHS yearling sale for $52,000 by Ruyan and Barry Kerbel. Prepared by trainer Denyse McClachrie, Miss Speedy won her first career start despite a poor start. She quickly attracted the interest of Barber and the Kerbels sold a share in the big filly. Miss Speedy went on to win an allowance race with a 90 Beyer Speed Figure, finish fourth in the Bison City Stakes and then take the Duchess Stakes at Woodbine. Following an unplaced outing in the Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland, Miss Speedy was away for one year.
In 2022, Miss Speedy won an optional claiming race before being eased in a stakes race on dirt at Gulfstream.
In February of this year, she went through the Fasig Tipton Kentucky Mixed Sale and Barber bought out the Kerbels for $120,000. The Ballade was Miss Speedy’s third race this year and she had been second in the Grade 3 Whimsical in May. She has a record of 12-5-1-1 and over $295,000 in earnings.
Josie Carroll’s Natural Hat Trick
As easy as 1-2-3, or in trainer JOSIE CARROLL’S case, races 2, 3 and 4 on Saturday.
Carroll saddled three straight winners with the streak beginning with first-time starter GALLOPING D’ORO, a three-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro – Galloping Ami by Victory Gallop. Sent out as the 9-to-5 favourite in the off-the-turf maiden sprint, Galloping d’Orio was sent hard out of the gate by Luis Contreras to chase front-runner Royal Quality, But the Ivan Dalos homebred lost ground into the turn and appeared to be backing away. In the stretch run, however, the colt turned on the jets and was up for the win in 1:10.34.Considering his immaculate pedigree, Galloping d’Oro was bought back for $80,000, considerably lower than his sire’s fee in 2020 which was $200,000. He’s the ninth named foal of the unraced Galloping Ami and thus he is a fourth generation Dalos-bred, tracing back to one of his foundation mares, Silly Billie.
Galloping Ami, voted Outstanding Broodmare at the Sovereign Awards in 2016, has produced Champion 3-Year-old Amis Gizmo (2016), who won the Prince of Wales Stakes, among other races, Ami’s Flatter, winner of the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes, and Aragorn Ami, winner of the Martha Washington Stakes.
Carroll also won with THE ARCADIAN WAY, a new face in her barn for owner Mark Dodson, and Laconnian Stables’ CLEOMENES.

A BIT MORE! Remember the Two Bit Racing Stable that owned champion A Bit o’ Gold? Well that ownership group is back in some form with the A Bit More Racing and its first starter, the two-year-old beginner JOYA DE ORO, ran to her sizzling workouts and won race 5, a maiden optional dash at 5 furlongs for trainer Catherine Day Phillips. The daughter of Reload – Spani Lou by Spaniard was bred by Northern Dawn Stables and Denny Andrews and she was an $82,000 yearling purchase last August at the CTHS Ontario sale.
*The Tapeta track got very fast as the day went on as rain made the surface slick.
