Two graded races on the Tapeta for two-year-olds at Woodbine will run Sunday, November 2, and nice purses and a graded status await the winner of the pair of 1 1/16 mile races.
The Mazarine, race 6, for fillies, has a purse of $150,000 and three of the six entrants are maidens. Just one entrant is a stakes winner and that is Hillsbrook Farms homebred DIXIE LAW, who won the Cup & Saucer Stakes against Canadian-bred colts on turf on Oct. 5. The daughter of Tiz the Law, trained by Dale Desruisseaux, will be making her first start on the Tapeta, but she has trained on the surface regularly.
Dixie Law will be heavily favoured with Rafael Hernandez riding, and the only other winners in the field are BOLD TIME, a maiden winner at the distance last time with a 70 Beyer Figure for Josie Carroll and Chiefswood Stable and debut winner KATIE’S GRACE, who put up a 58 Beyer Figure in her sprint win for trainer Catherine Day Phillips.
Bold Time, the second foal from Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner Bold Script (Speightstown) will have Fraser Aebly on board. Katie’s Grace, with Ryan Munger up, is an Ontario-bred who races for American syndicate Chivalry Thoroughbreds, run by Charlie Gavin and Hubert Vester.
The three maidens are stakes-placed DYNA, third to probable two-year-old filly champion Corsia Veloce in the Catch a Glimpse Stakes; VANITY, second in a maiden allowance eight days ago; and the unplaced BACKSTREET EMMA.
Race 7 is the Grey Stakes (G3) which has seven entrants of which four are winners. The favourite figures to be the $500,000 purchase SILENT TACTIC, who won his debut for John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse on Oct. 10 at 1 1/16 miles with a 74 Beyer Figure. The Kentucky-bred is by Tacitus.
There are two entrants from trainer Miguel Clement that are shipping in from New York and both won their debut races on the Tapeta at Presque Isle Racetrack in Erie, PA. THE BIG CON (GB), by Dark Angel (Ire) blasted four rivals in his Sept. 17 win at one mile and he adds Lasix. Canadian champion rider SAHIN CIVACI is back in Ontario to ride.
The other Clement runner is MADAGASCAR, a Kentucky-bred by Twirling Candy who beat five runners in his win on Oct. 7. Madagascar is from the Hillsbrook Farm breeding line of Its a Ruby, one of the first purchases for Ontario breeder Garland Williamson. Its a Ruby produced stakes winner Like a Gem and Grade 1 winner Hard Not to Like, both Canadian-breds. Madagascar’s dam is Brooke and Emory.
Madagascar is co-bred by Ontario breeders Shirley and Anthony Camilleri’s Camhaven Farm.
The remainder of the Grey Stakes field includes debut winner BIG TIME BOSS, an Ontario-bred by Street Boss, for the Di Scola Boys; the maiden BUIUM, a homebred for Al and Bill Ulwelling by Uncle Mo; maiden WEMBLEY AVENUE for Bet Two Seven Stable; and optional maiden claiming winner GONE WITH DUWYN.
