Moira’s Australian debut wasn’t overly successful, but the Canadian Horse of the Year and Eclipse Award winner will surely step forward if she makes another run.
Now owned by Yulong Investments and trained by leading Australian conditioner Chris Waller, Moira was in a strong field for the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick racecourse early Saturday morning, Eastern time. It was her first run since she won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar for Woodbine trainer Kevin Attard and owners X-Men Racing, Madaket Stable and SDF Bloodstock.
From there, Moira went into quarantine, then to England to train, and finally to Australia.
In the Doncaster, Moira was racing right-handed for the first time, shortening up to one mile and trying a course listed as ‘good’ by post time. Surprisingly bet down from 18-to-1 to about 6-to-1, Moira had post 18, saddle towel 10, and she was in the back of the field behind a modest pace for the duration of the race. Moira ended up 14th, but just under five lengths behind the winner Stefi Magnetica.
“She got a little bit lost prior to straightening, lost her rhythm,” said Moira’s jockey Zac Purton. “But she’ll be fine, she just needs time to settle in.”
Moira is nominated to two other Group 1’s in Sydney, although both are next weekend.
Classy mare Stefi Magnetica gave trainer Bjorn Baker and jockey Jason Collett the biggest win of their careers when claiming the $4 million Group 1 over Royal Patronage and Encap. The time for the race was 1:35.28.
The $5.50 favourite Linebacker got too far back in a slowly run race before charging home to finish outside the placings.
The win was Stefi Magnetica’s fourth from 20 starts and took her earnings to more than $5.6 million.
The four-year-old mare by All Too Hard is now a two-time Group 1 winner having last year won Queensland’s biggest race, the Stradbroke Handicap.
