AMANDA CAMERON is a recognizable horseperson in Ontario as groom of the great Wando, the last Canadian Triple Crown winner. Known at that time as Amanda Erwin, the young woman who worked for Hall of Fame trainer Mike Keogh for many years was named Outstanding Groom at the 2018 Sovereign Awards.
Last year, Amanda, now married to Zack Cameron, took out her trainer’s license and had eight starters with her husband to begin her career. On June 15, the Camerons celebrated their first win as owner and trainer with LA PRINCESSA POLLY (Big Screen – Lassair by Elusive Quality) who won a maiden $15,000 claiming race on the turf, the last race on Thursday evening.
Ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson, La Princessa Polly, a $10,000 claim last June, was making her first start since September and was well prepared for her return. She was engaged in a tough stretch battle with Forest Vixen but did not let that rival past.
This was the third starter for Cameron this season.
Earlier on the Thursday evening card, apprentice rider RACHEL SLEVINSKY won her first Woodbine race by guiding 11-to-1 shot A GAL FOR T J to a front-running score in a 1 1/16 mile turf race for $14,000 claiming.
Slevinsky, who began her riding career last summer at Century Mile in Alberta, is a 10-pound apprentice represented by agent Brandon Fairlie. Slevinsky, who was celebrating her birthday on Thursday, has won four races this year.
On the equine side, first-time starter DELPHIA won a 1 1/16 mile maiden special weight for X-Men Racing and SF Bloodstock. This sizey bay filly rallied from well off the pace to win by three lengths in a sharp 1:43.78 for a 70 Beyer Figure according to Daily Racing Form. Kevin Attard trains Delphia, who is by Mucho Macho Man from the Quality Road mare Quality Diamond. The filly, a $45,000 Keeneland September yearling in 2021, was bred by Adena Springs.
