Ontario mares produced more foals in 2022 than in 2021, according to statistics released by The Jockey Club on October 12.  Of the 10 states and provinces which had the most mares covered in 2021, Ontario was one of four that had an increase in foals produced from one year ago, reporting a 12% increase. The numbers released showed 653 mares bred in 2021, 359 live foals of 2021, and 402 live foals reported for 2022.

The Jockey Club reported that 1,303 stallions covered 29,065 mares in North America during 2021, according to statistics compiled through October 6, 2022. These breedings have resulted in 18,609 live foals of 2022 being reported to The Jockey Club on Live Foal Reports.

The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is 85-90 percent complete. The reporting of live foals of 2022 is down 2.2 percent from last year at this time when The Jockey Club had received reports for 19,021 live foals of 2021.
