The lucrative Ontario Thoroughbred Improvement Program has awarded dozens of breeders of Ontario-bred/Ontario-sired horses for 2022, and Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs topped the list at the $200,000 cap. That cap does not include the breeder awards of $50,000 and $30,000 respectively for MOIRA winning the Queen’s Plate and Woodbine Oaks.
The top 20 list by breeder’s awards includes many longtime Thoroughbred breeders in the province including Ivan Dalos’ Tall Oaks Farm, Sam-Son Farm, the Everatt family, Dr. John Brown’s Spring Farm, Terra Racing and others.
Joe Guerrieri’s Joey Gee Thoroughbreds had an impressive year with his homebreds which included multiple stakes-placed HALL OF DREAMS, a son of Lemon Drop Kid, who was second in the Plate Trial, Plate, and Breeders’ Stakes.
Howard Walton’s Norseman Racing has been breeding horses for a couple of decades and he stands one of the province’s leading stallions, Signature Red. Signature Red had a couple more new stakes winners in 2022, the 2-year-old fillies A Touch of Red and Ancient Spirit.
Frank DiGiulio, Jr. continues to breed successful horses and he races most of them. In 2022 his homebred Corduroy Road was a multiple winner as was Last American Exit. One horse that DiGiulio did not keep was Twin City, who was an auction purchase by Brent and Russ McLellan and trainer Stuart Simon. Twin City was second in the Coronation Futurity and is a King’s Plate hopeful for 2023.
