Vancouver, B.C. – Jockey Pedro Alvarado made amends aboard Ookashada in winning the $55,733 Jim Coleman Province Stakes Monday afternoon at Hastings Racecourse.

Ookashada broke sharply, rallied from three wide and gained the lead in the late stretch to make amends for a disappointing second-place finish in the CTHS Sales Stakes when he went head-to-head with Thesaratogaexpress and lost to Stephanson.

“I tried something a little different today,” Alvarado said. “When I went to the whip, he took off.” Ookashada, trained by Toni and Mark Cloutier, ran the 6 ½ furlongs in 1:10.9 and paid $4.70 to win.

Thesaratogaexpress finished second while Stephanson was third.

Saturday’s $55,733 Emerald Downs Stakes at Hastings saw upset winner Napa ($26.90) get some help from her stablemate, Sophisticated Star. Trainer Dino Condilenios had a plan and it worked to perfection with Sophisticated Star setting a fast opening quarter mile fraction of :22.01 seconds before tiring and finishing last.

Napa, with Frank Fuentes in the irons, stumbled at the start but settled in comfortably while the other three horses in the race took early runs at Sophisticated Star. Napa rallied strongly and Restless Lady finished second. Heavily favoured Suva made a four-wide move at the quarter-pole and finished third.
