The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC), a self-financing regulatory agency responsible for the regulation of the horse racing industry in Ontario, has an immediate opening for an ORC Veterinarian.
As an ORC Veterinarian, you will complete pre-race examinations and observe to determine the racing soundness of horses. You will be present at the track in case of accidents and to be responsible for the proper control and prevention of infectious diseases. This position will also monitor for the misuse of drugs and provide professional advice to the Stewards. The Official Veterinarian is also responsible for the supervision of Vet Clerks.
Qualifications: The candidate must be a duly qualified veterinarian with authority to operate as such in the Province of Ontario, must have thorough knowledge of the Rules of Racing and knowledge of the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) Equine Drug Control Program.
Assets include experience in business planning and reporting, well developed communication skills including presentation, conflict resolution and computer skills. Demonstrated professional judgment, political acuity, strong ethics and integrity, willingness to learn, self motivation and innovation are important.
Other desirable qualifications include a good knowledge of horsemanship and knowledge of the training and care of racehorses, knowledge of the ORC out of Competition testing program and the Medication Task Force as well as French language skills. Conflicts of interest must be resolved before the commencement of employment.
This is a full-time position, requiring travel to racetracks in Ontario and working out of the Woodbine Racetrack in the west end of Toronto.
