Woodbine invader PAT’SSEWINGMACHINE (We Miss Artie – Time to Love by Kitten’s Joy) and jockey Teshawn Hazelwood held off a closing SO SAUVE (IRE) to win the $50,000 Coolmore Stakes (G1) at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados on Feb. 3, a local prep for the Sandy Lane Gold Cup (G1).
Trained by Ted Holder, who is based at Woodbine, for the new FUN IN THE SUN RACING SYNDICATE, Pat’ssewingmachine was making his first start in Barbados since he was ninth in consecutive optional claiming races.
The six-year-old horse, making only his ninth career start, settled in third in the five-horse field traveling 1800 metres under 2023 champion apprentice Hazelwood, racing three-wide early outside of stablemate Forester Humor and favoured Renaisance Frolic.
Pat’ssewingmachine was carried wide into the clubhouse turn as the two leaders set pace fractions of 25.80, 50.00 and 1:15.40 on the firm turf. After taking back to track Forester Humor and Renaisance Frolic on the backstretch, the horse moved three wide into the stretch. Forester Humor, a son of Ontario stallion Old Forester, faded and Renaisance Frolic, under jockey Rey Williams, checked hard. That left Pat’ssewingmachine on the lead as Nalicia Cozier’s So Suave, the Coolmore winner a year ago, gained ground. But that pair came up half a length short as Pat’ssewingmachine grabbed the victory, his second of his career. So Suave was 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Renaise Frolic who was being eased up, followed by Zaeed and Forester Humor. Vividly was scratched.
The time was 1:52.80.
Fun in the Sun Racing was put together by Darwin Clarke and Deryck Lynch. Pat’ssewingmachine was purchased by Lynch at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling sale for just $3,500. The horse was bred by Ken and the late Sarah Ramsey in Maryland. Ramsey, who has sent horses from the United States to win the Gold Cup three times, is expected to have at least two starters in the March 2 race.
Pat’ssewmingmachine (Lynch names his horses after his late wife Pat) is by the late We Miss Artie, who was standing in Ontario when he was bred to the A Time to Love. A Ramsey homebred, A Time to Love won four of 18 races and $149,000 and has produced one other winner from three named foals. Second dam Littlebitoflove had 10 winners from 10 named foals including two stakes-placed horses.
The second subscription (nomination) payment for the Gold Cup is due Friday, Feb. 9.
