A field of 12 of the top handicap horses in training in the U.S. will be entered today for the 4th Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), the $3 million race at 1 1/8 miles on dirt to be run Saturday, Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park. The race tops a big card of racing that also includes the Pegasus World Cup Turf.
The Pegasus, which began as an innovative ‘put your money up’ winter spectacular originally cost $1 million to buy a spot in the race. This year it is free to enter and your horse gets invited.
The race was up to $16 million in purse but is now $3 million and some stars of the handicap division have been lured instead to the Saudi Cup worth $20 million in February.
The race has lured, however, the wonderful colt OMAHA BEACH, once a Kentucky Derby favourite who had to miss that race, and recently back in action with flair. This will be the last career race for the talented colt and that follows the patter of previous Pegasus winners, City of Light and Gun Runner who ran in the race and then went off to stud.
So, the race is an interesting event for what is mostly a slow couple of months in horse racing, the Turf race will be good with Bricks and Mortar in the field and the entire card should be grand. Core customers of racing will be enthralled.
