The two-year-olds kick off the 40th Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Friday, November 3 at Santa Anita. Future Stars Friday features five Cup races, each one a fascinating handicapping puzzle.
RACE 5 (5 P.M. EASTERN) – BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE TURF SPRINT (G1).
5 furlongs on the turf. Since Santa Anita cannot race 6 furlongs on the turf, the turf sprints are at just 5 furlongs which means breakneck speed and a lot of luck are the key factors. PICK 5 wagering.
Horse #
3 – TIGER BELLE (Ire) – 15-to-1 longshot choice (I have a couple of these today) She won a Group 3 in France last out over a nice one in Dawn Charger. She will need a good kick at the very short distance.
4 – BIG EVS (Ire) – very quick colt blazed to a big win in the Group 2 Flying Childers Sept. 15 at Doncaster.
1 – CRIMSON ADVOCATE – US filly went to Ascot and won the Queen Mary (G2) over next out Group 2 winner Relief Rally. George Weaver saddled three in this race.
8 – CHERRY BLOSSOM – Aidan O’Brien-trained filly was 4th in Group 1 Cheveley Park last out.
RACE 6 – JUVENILE FILLIES (G1)
1 1/16 miles, dirt. The great mare Beholder’s daughter Tamara is 4 to 5 on the morning line. This is the start of a Pick 4.
7 – TAMARA – Not going to empty the wallet keying in on this undefeated filly as she tries two turns for the first time, but her Del Mar win was stunning.
1 – CANDIED – Unbeaten on the east coast in two races for trainer Todd Pletcher.
12 – JUST F Y I – Post position is nasty but if she can tuck in by the first turn, she has a good chance to be in the top three.
2 -JODY’S PRIDE – also two for two on the east coast and 15-to-1 on the morning line.
RACE 7 – JUVENILE FILLIES TURF (G1)
1 mile, turf
4 – LAULNE (Fr) – recently purchased for $793,000 by a number of US interests, 15-to-1, finished strongly in Group 3 at 6 furlongs last time.
9 – CARLA’S WAY (Ire) – Group 2 winner in England defeated Ylang Ylang last time, that one came back to win a Group 1.
11 – SHE FEELS PRETTY – Won Woodbine’s Natalma Stakes with flair and was one of five fillies to come out of that race to win their next starts.
6 – PORTA FORTUNA (Ire) – Group 1 winner in England may have some tactical speed.
RACE 8 – JUVENILE (G1)
1 1/16 miles
Bob Baffert seems to have a stranglehold on this race with three top colts but eastern colt Locked is my choice
6 – LOCKED – wide trip on way to Breeders’ Futurity win.
2 – PRINCE OF MONACO – unbeaten in 3 races.
10 – MUTH – Gr 1 winner.
1 – THE WINE STEWARD – edged by top pick.
RACE 9 – JUVENILE TURF (G1)
1 mile, turf
2 – RIVER TIBER (Ire) – loved the way he finished in Gr 1 at 6 furlongs last time in England for Aidan O’Brien.
9 – ENDLESSLEY – unbeaten in 3 races in California.
5 – MY BOY PRINCE – he could lead for a long time.
14 – CARSON’S RUN – won the Summer Stakes at Woodbine.
