A fire at Classy Lane Stables in Puslinch, Ontario, has killed more than 40 horses.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at about 11:00 p.m. on Monday January 4th. The cause is undetermined at this time.

According to Barb Miller, who owns the harness racing facility with husband Jamie, at least 43 Standardbred horses perished. The couple was in Florida when they received the news. Miller told The Canadian Press that her husband was trying to catch a flight home immediately.

Classy Lane Stables, which opened in 2003, has five barns, which can accommodate more than 200 horses. It is home to Standardbred horses that race at Woodbine, Mohawk and Flamboro Downs.

Woodbine held a tribute to the fallen horses on January 7th.
