Stonestreet Farm’s Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, suffered complications after foaling a Bernardini filly on Tuesday. The champion mare underwent surgery yesterday to repair a bruised section of her small colon, which was damaged during delivery, at the Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, Kentucky.
Stonestreet Farm issued a release late last night, which stated that “a full prognosis cannot be determined at this time, but [Rachel Alexandra’s] condition is serious.” Her filly, who weighed in at 140lbs, returned to Stonestreet yesterday and is in good condition, under the care of a nurse mare.
Rachel Alexandra had complications following her first foaling last January, and was admitted to the Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic for pain management. She recovered quickly and returned to Stonestreet with her colt within a few days.
Rachel Alexandra is owned by Barbara Banke, widow of the late Jess Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson wines and Stonestreet Farm. In 2009, she won the Preakness Stakes, the first filly to do so in 85 years. When she was named Horse of the Year, also in 2009, she became the first filly to receive the honour in more than 50 years. She retired in September 2010.
