While Alberta awaits construction of its brand new racetrack, Century Mile, racing will continue at Northlands Park Racetrack in Edmonton.

Earlier this year, it was announced that 2016 would be the final season of Thoroughbred and harness racing at Northlands, but the track has reached an agreement with Horse Racing Alberta that will see races continue through June 2018.

Century Mile is expected to open in July 2018. Century Casinos announced plans in September to build the $50-million facility near the Edmonton International Airport. It will feature the only mile-long track in Western Canada, include stabling for 800 horses and house 1,100 slot machines. That is the maximum number of slots allowable by the Alberta government, and approximately double that which is currently available at Northlands.
