The City of Oshawa is developing Sandy Hawley Park at 2500 Kentucky Derby Way and wants to hear from you on the proposed concept.

The new park is named in honour of Oshawa native and member of Canada’s Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame, Sandy Hawley. Hawley, a member of Order of Canada, was named Canada’s top athlete twice and was also inducted into the United States National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

“Sandy Hawley ranks as one of the all-time best jockeys in North America. Come and give the City your input as to how we all might make this park something memorable,” said Councillor Rick Kerr, Chair of the Community Services Committee.

“I hope area residents in particular take a bit of time to provide feedback on the Sandy Hawley Park design, as it is embedded right in the neighbourhood and will be a great recreational and meeting space for many years to come,” said Councillor Derek Giberson, Vice-Chair of the Community Services Committee.

The proposed concept for Sandy Hawley Park features new open space and recreational facilities, including a soccer pitch, half basketball court, playground, splash pad, sandbox and gathering space.

Community members are invited to have their say:

  • Online on Connect Oshawa
  • On paper at Service Oshawa (50 Centre St. S.); or,
  • In person at a drop-in open house on Wednesday, November 27 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the Leisure Room at Delpark Homes Centre (formerly Legends Centre) (1661 Harmony Rd. N.).

Feedback will be received until 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 11 and considered in the selection of the types of playground components that may be installed in the park. The proposed design will be presented to Community Services Committee in early 2020, with construction tentatively scheduled to take place the same year.
