The exciting young stallion SERGEI PROKOFIEV, a sensation at stud in his first two seasons in England, arrived at Ballycroy Bloodstock last weekend to prepare for his first season at stud in Ontario. The son of Scat Daddy, who was bred in Ontario by David Anderson’s Anderson Farms and sold to Coolmore as a yearling for $1.1 million at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, was bought by Anderson late last year.
It is a big week for the stallion, as his son MHALLY (GB) competes in the world’s richest race, the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) on Feb. 13 in Riyadh. Mhally, from Sergei Prokofiev’s first crop, was third in the Group 3 Saudi Derby in 2025. The bay comes off a victory in the Custodian Of The Two Holy Mosques Cup Saudi Cup 2026 Qualifier (G3) at King Abdulaziz racecourse. The Saudi Cup has attracted one of the top horses in training, Forever Young.
Sergei Prokofiev, whose son River of Life recently won his debut at Dundalk in Ireland, is arguably one of the most exciting stallions to come to Ontario. On the track, he won four of 14 starts for Coolmore and earned $181,145, highlighted by victories in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes and the listed Cork Stakes, both at Newmarket in England, as well as the Irish listed Rochestown Stakes. His lone North American start came in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs, where he finished eighth behind Bulletin.
From his first crop, Sergei Prokofiev sired Group 1 winner Arizona Blaze and through February 7, he has 71 winners. Ballycroy Bloodstock, managed by Michaela Kemp, has more information on Sergei Prokofiev, who is already booked up for 2026.
