A petition on change.org has been launched by Cynthia Pelletier of Langley, BC, to reopen the Fraser Downs race track, which was closed by its operator, Great Canadian Entertainment, on Friday, Aug. 15, after the City of Surrey, which owns the grounds, terminated the lease.
The petition, which to date has over 5,000 signatures, explains in part:
“Fraser Downs, a cornerstone of our local community located in Cloverdale, British Columbia, has been a beloved venue for harness racing enthusiasts and horsemen alike for a number of years. … The harness racing industry not only provides exciting entertainment, but also sustains numerous local jobs. From trainers, jockeys, and veterinarians, to hospitality workers and local vendors, Fraser Downs facilitates employment that many families in our community rely upon. The closure would mean a loss of income, displacing hundreds of workers, and crumbling a long-standing tradition.
“Statistically, the horse racing industry contributes significantly to the Canadian economy, generating over CAD 1 billion annually and supporting over 47,000 jobs. It is pivotal to uphold these benefits by preventing further erosion of our local racetracks like Fraser Downs in BC, which play a crucial role in maintaining this economic influx and employment opportunities.
“We urge local authorities and stakeholders to reconsider the decision, explore alternative measures – such as increased community partnerships, diverse event hosting, and sustainable financial planning – that can keep Fraser Downs operational.”
Some comments on the change.org page include Ashley from Chilliwack, who wrote, “My grandfather was Keith Linton (aka Link). A renowned, well known and respected racer/owner/trainer. His name sits in the hall of fame for this sport. His blood, sweat and tears helped form that track. To close that track is not only closing a part of his legacy, but many other racers, trainers and owners alike. Do not contribute to the continuation of erasing history. Instead honour it, restore it and keep it sacred for more generations to enjoy.”
Debbie of Richmond lamented, “We are slowly losing everything that made communities in the Lower Mainland special. Harness/horse racing has been part of our family for decades and I’m so disappointed to hear that one more thing is being shut down and stripped away from us. Please rethink this!”
