Racing at Woodbine was cancelled on Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3 due to a sewer line link that caused a sinkhole near the half mile pole on Woodbine’s Tapeta track.
Contractors remain on site working to resolve the issue.
Woodbine cancelled training on the main track both days also. Woodbine sent out a press notice on Thursday morning stating,
“With Thursday and Friday’s cards cancelled, Woodbine will run a 12-race card on Sunday that includes all seven of the previously drawn races from Thursday. Woodbine continues to have discussions with the HBPA and AGCO regarding a possible rescheduled race date for this Monday (July 6). Updates will continue to be provided as the situation develops.”
While no notice has been issued about whether the Friday card will be officially made up on Monday, a horsemen’s email suggested entries would be taken Friday for for both Monday and next Thursday. Thursdays are regularly drawn on Fridays.
The cancellations did avoid horses and horsepeople racing in extreme heat that has settled upon southern Ontario this week. The heat wave also led to several cancellations at racetracks in the eastern U.S.
