Sixteen-year-old SLADE JONES, son of successful Barbados and Canadian jockey Jono Jones, is expected to arrive at Woodbine later this week to continue his riding career in Ontario. The young Jones not only is the son of Barbados’ champion rider Jono, but grandson of the great Challenor Jones, who rode over 1,000 winners and then became a successful owner and breeder.
Slade, named after family friend and fellow Woodbine jockey Slade Callaghan, will be presented at Woodbine by agent Tom Patton and will be riding as a five-pound apprentice.
The young rider, who was born in Canada, began riding horses at the age of six and rode in his first race at the Garrison Savannah last summer. He won his first race in October.
Jono Jones, who retired in 2011, won three consecutive Barbados Gold Cups and made his mark in Ontario, riding more than 650 winners including A Bit o’ Gold, who won two-thirds of the Canadian Triple Crown in 2004.
