Trainer CHAD BROWN, talking to the New York Racing Association media office, said that Peter Brant’s stretch-running filly BIG BRASS BED will make her next start in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on July 23.
The chestnut Ontario-bred began her career in April at Gulfstream Park when third in a 7 1/2 furlong turf race and she won her maiden at Monmouth Park at 1 1/16 miles on turf on May 13 with a 78 Beyer Speed Figure. She was 7-to-2 in an allowance race last week at Belmont Park but was well back of a slow pace, stumbled into the stretch and closed well to be just 1 3/4 lengths back of the winner.
“She got a bad trip and took a bad step in the stretch,” said Brown of the filly’s last-out effort. “She’s recovered OK and we’ll just draw a line through it. The Woodbine Oaks will be next.”
Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms, Big Brass Bed is out of the Smart Strike mare Precision Farming. She was purchased for $175,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Brown also talked about his graded stakes-winning Canadian-bred colt KALIK, who will head to the King’s Plate (Aug. 20) should things continue to go well for the son of Collected. Also bred by Anderson Farms along with Peter Berglar, Kalik is being pointed to the July 8 Belmont Derby (G1) at 10 furlongs on turf.
