For the fourth consecutive year, the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society of Manitoba’s annual yearling sale realized an increase in average price. Held on the Red River Grounds at Assiniboia Downs on August 20, the sale reported 16 yearlings selling of 38 offered for $183,500 at an average price of $11,469.  During the 2022 edition, 17 of the 32 yearlings through the ring were sold for a gross of $170,150, averaging $10,008 per yearling. This year’s buyback rate finished at 58 percent, which was up from last year’s figure of 47 percent.

The sale topper was a son of California Grade 3 winner Nonios (Pleasantly Perfect) from the winning mare Nickle Candy by Silver Deputy. The dark bay is a half-brother to nine winners including stakes-placed Manewal.

The second highest-priced yearling was also the top-priced filly, a filly from the first crop of the Medaglia D’oro stallion Speculating who did not race. Speculating is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Well Armed. The top filly is from the mare Talkin Till Midnight by Broken Vow, who won four races and over $136,000.
