The Jockey Club of Canada will present duo Hall of Fame trainer ROGER ATTFIELD with the E.P. TAYLOR AWARD OF MERIT at the 50th Sovereign Awards on April 24 at the Paramount Eventspace in Woodbridge, ON.
Selected unanimously by the Jockey Club of Canada’s stewards, the E. P. Taylor Award of Merit is a lifetime achievement award honouring those who have made significant contributions to the Thoroughbred industry in Canada and accomplished outstanding individual achievements in Canadian Thoroughbred racing and breeding.
An honoured member of both the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Attfield has experienced decades of success, including having trained three Canadian Triple Crown winners in Izvestia, With Approval, and Peteski, and is a well-respected ambassador for Canadian horse racing and breeding. He has won eight Sovereign awards for Outstanding Trainer.
Attfield just sent out his 2,031st winner recently at Gulfstream Park in Florida and he is currently at his winter haven at Payson Park.
Previous honourees of the E.P. Taylor Award include Charles Taylor, David Willmot, Bob Anderson, Gus Schickedanz, Ivan Dalos and others.
The JCC also announced on Feb. 19 that Canadian Horse of the Year for 2023 and Eclipse Award winning Female Turf horse of 2024 MOIRA will receive a Special Sovereign Award as will jockey EMMA-JAYNE WILSON, who broke the earnings record for a female rider in 2024.
Moira is not eligible for a Sovereign Award in 2024 as she did not make the required three starts in Canada. The daughter of Ghostzapper, who was sold to Australian interests following her Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) win in November, is also the subject of two writing finalists and two photograph finalists.
The Outstanding Groom Award, sponsored by OLG, for 2024 will be presented to VICTOR JAMES. With over 25 years as a groom for trainer Josie Carroll, Victor James exhibits outstanding loyalty and dedication. The groom for champions such as Ami’s Gizmo, Serenading, and Tyson, Victor has also overseen the running of trainer Josie Carroll’s barn.
IAN DICK will receive the 2024 Off-Track Worker Award. A veteran of the Thoroughbred racing scene in Ontario, Ian Dick has been the manager of Buttigieg Training Centre for many years after taking a position there as assistant manager in 2013. Some of the outstanding runners which have benefited from his time and care include Paramount Prince, Patches O’Houlihan, and Pink Lloyd.
The Canadian bred three-year-old filly STORMCAST is a finalist in three categories for the 2024 Sovereign Awards. The Mitole gal, owned by K E M Racing Stable and trained by Mark Casse, is on the short list for three-year-old filly, Female Turf and Female Sprinter. Patches O’Houlihan is a finalist in two categories for 2024, Champion Male Sprinter and Male Turf horse, as is Filo di Arianna (Brz). My Boy Prince is a finalist for three-year-old Male and Male Sprinter.
The Outstanding Trainer Sovereign could come down to Mark Casse and Kevin Attard once again, with the latter having a slight edge. Casse horses figure to win a large amount of awards, but Attard won a Breeders’ Cup race and the King’s Plate, the latter race with three-year-old filly finalist Caitlinhergrtness.
Sahin Civaci, a finalist for Outstanding Jockey along with Rafael Hernandez and Patrick Husbands, appears to be poised to win his first Sovereign Award.
CANADIAN THOROUGHBRED‘S feature on Kevin Attard and Moira in the SIRE BOOK 2025 is a finalist for Writing. A photo that was published on CanadianThroughbred.com, ‘Right Way/Wrong Way’ by Mary Jane Sibbett, is a finalist for Outstanding Photograph.
