A son of young sire SPECULATING and first foal of Manitoba champion HIDDEN GRACE, by Going Commando, topped the annual CTHS MANITOBA YEARLING SALE on August 24 at Assiniboia Downs.
The sale was held for the first time at its new location on the track’s backstretch, and a catalogue of 40 was offered, a bigger book than in recent years.
The sales topper, by the unraced Medaglia d’Oro stallion Speculating, was offered by Ziprick Thoroughbreds, agent, and purchased by Barry Arnason for $36,000. Hidden Grace won 18 of 27 races and was a Horse of the Year in Manitoba.
The top-priced filly in the sale was a daughter of one of the province’s leading sires, NONIOS (Pleasantly Perfect) from the mare Dreaming of Sasha. The full sister to Manitoba champion Mr. Splash was bought for $28,000 by Anne Champion from consignor Larry Falloon.
Zirpick Thoroughbreds sold the third-highest-priced yearling, a Speculating gelding named Duel Identity, which went to A2 Thoroughbreds for $20,000.
While the gross sales for the auction was up to $218,550, the average for 21 sold was down to $10,407 from $15,818 for just 11 sold in 2024. In 2023, 16 yearlings sold for an average of $11,469.
