A strong field of 10 sprinters has been entered for Hastings racecourse’s $50,000 GEORGE ROYAL STAKES on June 4. The 6 1/2 furlong dash is race 6 at Hastings Saturday with a post time of 7:30 Eastern.
There is no shortage of speed in the race, which includes 5-to-2 morning line favourite ANYPORTINASTORM (City Zip), the multiple stakes-winning 8-year-old horse owned by Peter Redekop and trained by Frank Lucarelli. The well-travelled Florida-bred is making his Hastings debut following a third-place finish in the Lost in the Fog Stakes on April 30 at Golden Gate Fields. That was the first start for the horse since August.
A pair of British Columbia-breds blessed with brazen speed, BOLD ARCH (Archarcharch) and PORTER GENT (Second in Command) are coming off wins in their season openers, both in gate-to-wire fashion.
The George Royal will also be the first start of 2022 for newly turned 4-year-old UNCHARACTERISTIC, a finalist for Canada’s Champion 3-year-old colt at the Sovereign Awards for 2021. The grey son of Texas Wildcatter was last seen winning the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile on September 11.
Race 3 on Saturday is the $50,000 Emerald Downs Stakes for 3-year-olds and upward, fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs. HEIDI (Bayern), winner of her season opener for Swift Thoroughbreds and trainer Dino Condilenios, has post one and is the 8-to-5 morning line favourite.
