Thousands crammed Woodbine Racetrack for the 163rd Queen’s Plate last weekend. From the racing lovers and handicappers to the young and old, a huge crowd enjoyed a day to dress up, eat wonderful meals, taste the cocktails and people-watch. And when any race came down the stretch, the roar was deafening.
Surely there must be a new Thoroughbred owner out there.
And what better time to bring in a friend, neighbour, or your doctor into racehorse ownership than next week’s CTHS Ontario Canadian Premier Yearling Sale beginning at noon on August 31 at the Woodbine sales pavillion. There are more than 200 Canadian-bred youngsters catalogued which will meet the price range for any prospective owner or syndicate group.
Anyone who was at the Plate would have seen 12 additional races won by horses at all class levels and the joyous occasion of owners in the winner’s circle. And IRONSTONE , a $7,000 purchase at the 2019 sale, finished fourth in the Plate to superstar Moira, boosting his career earnings to over $314,000.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 29, yearlings will be on the sale grounds at Woodbine, available for inspection.
The Ontario-bred and -sired racing program at Woodbine is strong, with plenty of opportunities to watch your horses race for big purses and provincial bonuses.
This Sunday at Woodbine, the annual Yearling Sales Stakes day offers four stakes races for sale graduates worth a total of $600,000. There is also the lucrative Ontario Heritage Sire Series of races that has more than $800,000 in purses available.
The Ontario program is so strong that it has hiked up the prices of Canadian/Ontario-breds that sell in the US auctions. Moira, bred by Adena Springs in Aurora, ON, sold for $150,000 (US) at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky.
The Canadian Premier Yearling sale will have many more affordable offerings by a wide range of top stallions including some of the leading sires in Canada. These include Silent Name (Jpn), who had his newest stakes winner last weekend in Philip My Dear, Reload, Souper Speedy, Frac Daddy, Society’s Chairman, Signature Red, and Old Forester.
You can see many yearlings from some consignors on their Facebook pages.
