TIFFANY HUSBANDS has already met her goal for the 2020 racing season as a trainer at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg. Now the young woman is hoping her student DAZZLING GOLD can continue her winning ways in the upcoming Manitoba Oaks, July 31.
Dazzling Gold, a 3-year-old by True Sense – Gold Nite Destiny by Haus of Dehere is owned and was bred by Jarvis Swereda’s Starfield Stable. The filly just won the July 14 R C Anderson Stakes at 1 mile on the dirt by 7 1/2 lengths and she is now undefeated in 2 races having won the Hazel Wright Sires Stakes in her debut in June. Her groom is Paige Berard.
Husbands, married to Ontario jockey Chris Husbands, is a mother of two with a stable of 11 horses at Assiniboia.
“This is my third year training,” said Husbands. “I only had one horse my first year.”
Husbands, who has been on the track since she was a teenager, won 5 races in 2019 and her goal for 2020 was to beat that number and win a stakes race. Dazzling Gold has won two stakes and the RC Anderson victory was the 5th win for Husbands this season.
“The first stakes win, that was a little bit unbelievable,’ she said. “And I feel so much support here, everyone has seen me grow up.”
Husbands, whose maiden name is VanAssen, is cousins with jockey Alyssa Selman, who was seriously injured in a riding accident a few years ago.

Assiniboia also held the Derby Trial, worth $30,000 this past week, July 13. The prep is for the August 3 Manitoba Derby. REAL GRACE was a five-length winner for trainer Shelley Brown who co-owns with Jean McEwan, Bette Holtman and Bernell Rhone.
Rhone trained Real Grace (Mineshaft – True Way of Grace, by Yes It’s True) at Canterbury for three races and the gelding showed promise but was still a maiden coming into the Derby Trial.
Rico Walcott rode the winner.
