American-based Canadian-bred three-year-olds TOM’S MAGIC and MYTHICAL MAN compete in the June 28 Tale of the Cat Stakes on the turf at Monmouth Park in the hopes of later heading north to Canada for the King’s Plate.
The Tale of the Cat is a 1 1/16 mile race around two turns of the Monmouth course with a purse of $100,000. Tom’s Magic, a son of Triple Crown winner JUSTIFY and from the top mare DIXIE CHICKEN, dam of Woodbine Oaks winner DIXIE MOON, was bred by Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry and he was bought for $200,000 by CJ Thoroughbreds and Mo Speed Racing. The flashy chestnut colt won two straight races in New Orleans including the Black Gold Stakes at Fair Grounds on the grass on March 1. He recently had a bumpy and messy trip in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland and has been waiting for a spot to race.
Michael Stidham trains Tom’s Magic, who will head to Woodbine with a good effort.
Also in the race is Reeves Thoroughbred Racing’s MYTHICAL MAN, by Mucho Macho Man – Park Lane by Ghostzapper, who makes his first race since he won his second straight race on turf when he took an optional claiming/allowance race at Gulfstream Park in December.
The Adena Springs-bred, a $25,000 purchase as a short yearling in January 2023, has been gelded since his latest win. Danny Gargan trains. Dan Reeves, owned of Reeves Racing, said the gelding will head to the Plate with a good run.
The Tale of the Cat Stakes is race 8 at Monmouth with a 4:30 p.m. post time.
At PENN NATIONAL on FRIDAY NIGHT, June 27, the top Woodbine Oaks contender LOVE AND POETRY, by Hard Spun, is 6-to-1 to win the $150,000 Penn Oaks at 1 mile on the grass. The Oaks is race 5 with a post time of 7:10 p.m. this evening.
Love and Poetry, trained by Cherie DeVaux, was second in the LaCombe Memorial Stakes on turf at the Fair Grounds in March and recently a troubled third in a turf allowance race at Churchill Downs. Jose Ortiz will ride the Anderson, All My Hart Racing-bred filly.
