The three-race series at Woodbine for Canadian-bred three-year-old fillies, the Triple Tiara, winds up on September 10 with the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on the grass. The Tiara began with the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, won by Elysian Field, trained by Mark Casse, and the second leg, the $250,000 Bison City Stakes on Aug. 13 was won by the Casse-trained ME AND MY SHADOW.
With Elysian Field passing up the Wonder Where, Casse will seek a sweep of the series with Me and My Shadow, a daughter of Violence – Silhouette by Smart Strike. D J Stables’ filly ran the race of her career in the Bison City, winning the 1 1/16 mile Tapeta race by 3 1/2 lengths with an 83 Beyer Speed Figure. The transfer to the grass and the 10 furlong distance would seem to be the questions for Me and My Shadow. Her dam was unplaced in a pair of grass races although turf champion With Approval does appear further down in her pedigree.
If ever a race was made for a starter in this year’s Wonder Where, named for the 1959 Canadian Horse of the Year, it is the Wonder Where for WICKENHEISER. The daughter of Lemon Drop Kid – Game (Fr) by Montjeu (Ire) is a full sister to 2015 Wonder Where winner Season Ticket.
Trained by Kevin Attard for Clay Scherer and Al and Bill Ulwelling, Wickenheiser won her career debut in a 6 furlong turf sprint in July 2022. She was later fourth in the Grade 1 Natama on turf behind Last Call, Cairo Consort and G Laurie.
This year, Wickenheiser has been racing on Tapeta with a second-place finish against colts and then a good second in the Woodbine Oaks behind Elysian Field. The filly was never a threat in the King’s Plate, however, and landed 11th.
Kazushi Kimura returns to ride the stretch-running filly.
TITO’S CALLING, a daughter of Society’s Chairman, will be well supported in the Wonder Where based on her second-place finish in the Bison City and previous good turf efforts. Sahin Civaci will ride the Mike DePaulo trainee for owner Robert Marzilli.
Recent claim SEATTLE CAUSEWAY is a pace runner who was fourth in the Bison City and she won a turf race in a previous outing but was disqualified.
Sunday’s other stakes race, the fourth turf stake of the weekend, is the $100,000 Zadracarta Stakes, named after one of Canada’s brilliant sprint mares from Knob Hill Stables. Sweet Briar Too Stakes winner CANADIANSWEETHEART has the rail post for the 5 furlong turf dash and Leo Salles rides for owner Chris Manohar and trainer Renico Lafond.
