Voting for the 48th Annual Sovereign Awards begins Monday, January 9, 2023 as ballots and statistical information were sent out by the Jockey Club of Canada to voters across Canada. The completed online ballots are due no later than 11:59 pm (EST) on Sunday, January 22, 2023.

This year’s Sovereign Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, ON.

Twelve horse categories, including Outstanding Broodmare and Horse of the Year, plus five human categories are on the Sovereign Awards ballot.

The finalists for all categories except Horse of the Year will be announced in early February.

The Horse of the Year honour is expected to come down to multiple graded stakes winner LADY SPEIGHTSPEARE, who finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at Keeneland to complete her season and the top 3-year-old filly MOIRA, winner of the Queen’s Plate and Woodbine Oaks and a close second in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes (before being disqualified) and multiple graded stakes winning older male WHO’S THE STAR.
