The buzz at WOODBINE last week was the 1 mile workout by SHIRL’S SPEIGHT, the undefeated 3-year-old Kentucky-bred for Charles Fipke, trained by Roger Attfield. who could be headed to the Kentucky Derby in 1 1/2 weeks, Sept. 5.

While the work did not go quite the way trainer Attfield wanted according to Daily Racing Form, he thought the group went a bit slow at the outset, the colt exited the 1 mile prep in 1:39.20 well. Shirl’s Speight worked with three others including stablemate Perfect Tapatino. He is scheduled to have one more 5 furlong breeze before he heads to Kentucky.

Attfield told DRF that he will accompany Shirl’s Speight to Churchill Downs which means he will have to quarantine for 14 days upon his return to Canada.

SHIRL’S SPEIGHT, by Speightstown. is reportedly #20  to get into the Derby after defections. Currently TIZ THE LAW is at 4 to 5 in William Hill advance wagering.
