Woosh. That was the sound that came from the two-year-old Ontario bred filly LAMIRADA (Army Mule – Sister Nation by Verrazano) on Saturday when she won her career debut by a stunning 11 3/4 lengths in 1:09.84 under a hand ride.
Mark Dodson’s homebred, trained by Josie Carroll, had been working under her dam’s dam until very recently and her prep times were solid. In Saturday’s fifth race, Lamirada and jockey Fraser Aebly skipped to the lead easily and simply drew off, stopping the clock in 1:09.84 for an 85 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form.
That Beyer puts her 5th in North America for top juvenile Beyers so far this year and 2nd among fillies.
Lamirada is a half sister to stakes winner Notorious Gangster, also trained by Carroll and the recently retired Highland Blue.
The list of impressive juvenile winners this year at Woodbine is a good one with winners such as Sakpe (no Beyer available), Del La Renta (79) and Go for Launch. American based EZ Tina also won her debut at Woodbine before she went to Royal Ascot
At Saratoga on Saturday, the 2-year-old beginner COACH POPE, co-bred by Tall Oaks Farm in Kentucky, finished second in a fast maiden race, earning an 88 Beyer Figure. Coach Pope is by Tapit out of Canadian champion Gamble’s Ghost, by Ghostzapper.

*Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer SID ATTARD is on a roll of a lifetime. With 6 wins last week, Attard has won 13 of his last 29 starts (45 percent) and 19 of his last 51, or 37 percent.
Attard has won with 2-year-olds such as Bitter Bullet, fillies like Twisting Pistons and turfers such as Lady of the Nile. In addition, Attard recently won his 2,200th career race.
*King’s Plate week is underway and the post position draw is Tuesday morning. The draw has been changed again to the format where connections get a selection order and then pick their post.
A field of 12 is still expected with the prime players being the filly LUSTER and Marine Stakes (G3) 1-2 finishers BRACHETTO and MAGICAL FACTOR.
Note that the trainers of those three horses, Josie Carroll, Julia Carey and Rachel Halden all had winners last week and are doing very well in 2026.
On the jockey side, FRASER AEBLY has a great deal of momentum as does JOSE CAMPOS. The former will ride Gary Barber’s Military Time in the Plate and Campos will ride Magical Factor.
Last year’s wagering on Plate day was $16.9 million.
Post time on August 15 is 12 or 12:30 p.m.
