Canadian trainer KEVIN ATTARD, whose starry-eyed dream continues with his mare STARSHIP JUBILEE, reported Monday morning that the seven-year-old Indy Wind mare is likely to continue racing for owners Blue Heaven Farm. Starship Jubilee romped to a third straight Sunshine Milllions Filly & Mare Turf at Gulftsream on Jan. 18, the first horse to ever win three Sunshine Million races. Of course, the speedy bay gal comes off her biggest year when she won the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine and she is most likely going to be named the Sovereign Award winning Champion Turf Mare for the third consecutive year and she is a prime contender for Canadian Horse of the Year.
“She sure is pretty awesome and came out of the race great,” said Attard to Canadian Thoroughbred. “It’s looking more and more like she will campaign this year but there is still a discussion that is going to be had in the next couple of days.
Attard raced Starship Jubilee with Soli Mehta after claiming her for $16,000 in Feb. 2017. She won a pile of stakes races and then was solid privately to Bonnie Baskin’s Blue Heaven Farm in November 2018.
“The owner’s priority is that she still enjoys her job and more importantly that she is healthy and from my end she couldn’t be better. Her performance on Saturday would indicate she still enjoys what she is doing and hasn’t lost a step.
Starship Jubilee earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure for her win in 1:42.57 for 1 1/16 miles on turf. She has 15 wins in 33 races and $1.2 million in earnings.
*ROGER ATTFIELD unleashed an exciting prospect on Jan. 19 at Gulfstream when ELIZABETH WAY (Ire), owned by John McCormack, won her North American debut in a maiden allowance race with an 80 Beyer Speed Figure. An impeccably bred daughter of the great Frankel from Group 1 winner Maid’s Causeway (Giant’s Causeway), Elizabeth Way was second twice in four races last year in Ireland on synthetic dirt and turf, she was bought by McCormack (whose brother is successful Ontario breeder Bernard McCormack) at Goffs November for 58,000 pounds.
Elizabeth Way came from far back to win the turf maiden race on Sunday by 3/4 of a length and the 4-year-old will likely be heading to Woodbine later this year.
*Canadian-bred 3-year-olds in action at Fair Grounds on Jan. 18 had mixed results. Coronation Futurity winner HALO AGAIN made his first start since his big Woodbine win in the Lecomte Stakes but in a big field, he had a wide and somewhat crowded trip and he landed 8th beaten 10 1/2 lengths with a 71 Beyer Figure. The Anderson Farms-bred colt is owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton. In the same race, impressive maiden winner SYACMORE RUN, stretching out to 1 1/16 miles off his sprint win, also raced wide and he faded to 12th. He is owned by Scott and Evan Dilworth and is by Street Sense.
Also at Fair Grounds, AUBURN HILLS, a son of Palace Malice – Timeless Silver by Silver Deputy, finished a closing second in a dead heat in a 1 1/8 mile maiden race on the grass. This Queen’s Plate hopeful, bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt Meeuse in Ontario and owned by Grandview Thoroughbreds, Cheyenne Racing and LNJ Foxwoods, is trained by Josie Carroll. The chestnut colt has two seconds and a third in three races.
*MUSKOKA GOLD, a contender for Champion Two-Year-Colt in Canada at the April Sovereign Awards, had his second workout of this 3-year-old season on Jan. 14 at Casse Training Centre. The Cup & Saucer Stakes winner went four furlongs in 50.20. He is owned by Conrad Farms and trained by Mark Casse. Muskoka Gold is one of the early favourites for the 2020 Queen’s Plate.
*Canadian champion MUSKETIER (Ger), the 2011 Sovereign Award winning turf male, is the sire of Indian Oaks (G1) winner Juliette in Mumbai, Jan. 18. The video of her win is below.
