CLIVE CROSS is a maiden no more. The six-year-old gelding, the first horse owned by Steve Doane and Mark Varey, charged to his first career win in Friday’s finale, which was his first race of the year. Trained by Krista Cole, Clive Cross was making his 19th career start, but he did not debut until he was four. The son of Reload – Port Wine by Porto Foricos won the $10,000 maiden claiming race by 2 1/2 lengths under jockey Leo Salles.
The gelding is named for the late Dave Clive Cross, who trained Kentucky Derby winner Sunny’s Halo.

An exciting winner on Thursday was the invading JET SWEEP JOE, owned by Hall Stables LLC and trained by Paul McEntee. The three-year-old colt was meeting a tough field of speedsters in the 5 furlong turf dash worth over $117,000, but he swept past the leaders from a smart ride under Rafael Hernandez. The son of Frosted ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last year and was ninth to Magnum Force. He was recently fourth in the Paradise Creek Stakes at Aqueduct.
Here is some background on Jet Sweep Joe, an interview done after the stocky gelding won his career debut.
