Jockey RAFAEL HERNANDEZ won 8 races on Saturday and Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend (with Monday racing still to come) and trainer Mark Casse won 4 on Sunday as both sit in the lead in their categories. As Woodbine  approaches its 2 biggest races of the year, the Queen’s Plate Sept. 12 and the Woodbine Mile, Sept. 19, there were 5 straight days of racing beginning last Thursday.

Woodbine is expected to open up the track a bit more to owners for Plate day which should put a few more people around the giant grandstand come the weekend. It is a very quiet place to be these days with races going off every 30 minutes to a handful of horsepeople.

Here are some of the winners from the week:

SUNDAY

RED HIERARCHY is an undefeated 3-year-old sprinter for Howard Walton’s Norseman racing and trainer Jamie Attard. The flashy chestnut won for the 3rd time in Sunday’s first race at 6 1/2 furlongs, scoring by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:16.70 over Ari Gold Speedwagon who did a Dayjur-type leap at the finish:

Graded stakes winner LOOKIN TO STRIKE, owned by Gary Barber, won his 2020 Woodbine return in this 6 furlong sprint allowance.optional claiming race. The 5-year-old won the Grade 3 Ontario Derby in 2018 but was winless in 2019. He was one of 4 Casse winners on the 11 race card.

Race 7 was for 2-year-old maidens on the grass and Colebrook farms’ Florida-bred DECIMATOR was the winner under Steve Bahen. This guy is by The Big Beast and was a $40,000 yearling purchase in Florida last fall.

SOUPER MUNNINGS won her maiden in her 2nd career start for Live Oak Plantation and Casse and Hernandez. The 2-year-old by Munnings was a $350,000 2yo purchase this past June. Casse has 40 wins at Woodbine, 40% of his wins of the entire season.

LUCKY GIRASOL is 2 for 2 this year on the turf for Connie, Tom and Kathy Patton. She is in the orange with black blinkers.

 

SATURDAY

Trainer KEITH EDWARDS got his first win of the year with the 2-year-old UNLIMITED TALENT, a Souper Speedy colt bred by John Carey. Edwards also owns the fellow who won for $40,000 claiming with Jet Li Jason Hoyte riding.

Champion female sprinter of 2019 SUMMER SUNDAY rolled to a 90 Beyer Figure win in race 6 after a short freshening. The cooler weather-loving mare by Silent Name won in 1:08.74 for Anne and William Scott and trainer Stuart Simon.

Owner Mike Ambler‘s Kentucky bred Silent Name filly SILENT GUROO won a 2-year-old maiden race on the grass in race 7. Trained by Nick Gonzalez, the $12,500 purchase was making her 2nd career start.

PINK LLOYD earned a 97 Beyer Figure for his Vigil Stakes win.
