According to a report in the Toronto Star, the issue of expanding gaming operations at Woodbine Racetrack may be back up for debate, after a May 2013 decision to ban table games at the facility.
Back in 2013, Toronto’s city councillors voted 20-24 against allowing table games at the Woodbine, during a meeting in which they also decided not to allow a casino in downtown Toronto.
It has been reported that executives from Woodbine have met recently with Toronto mayor John Tory to reignite the discussion. Tory’s communications director, Amanda Galbraith, has confirmed the meetings, but said Tory will only entertain the idea if Woodbine is willing to make further enhancements to their facility, including hotel accommodations, restaurants and other amenities that would bring employment opportunities to the area.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which will only build or expand gaming facilities without municipal support, has set a deadline of April 30th for potential gaming facility operators to submit requests for pre-qualification. Stay tuned for updates.
