SOUPER SURVIVOR, a son of the late Souper Speedy, grabbed his first stakes win of what looks like a promising career on Sunday, September 13 at Woodbine. He was heavily bet at 25 cents on the dollar in the $150,000 Bull Page Stakes.
The speedy bay, owned by Natural Eight Stable and Racing Canada and trained by Bill Tharrenos, quickly cleared his five rivals in the 6 1/2 furlong race on Tapeta, was shaken up on the turn by jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, and then drew off to win by 5 1/4 lengths. He ran the distance in 1:17.97.
Second in the Bull Page, which is for Ontario-sired two-year-old colts and geldings, was Longshot Leo, by Old Forester, who has been second in all five of his career starters for trainer James Bentley Begg. The Bull Page was the second win in three races for Souper Survivor, who won his debut by more than 10 lengths with a 73 Beyer Speed Figure. He had a bit of a troubled run when second in the Simcoe Stakes on August 30, so he was back in just 13 days for the Bull Page.
“We did some work on him, we pulled some blood,” said Tharrenos. “Dr. Victoria [Banks] helped us out. His blood wasn’t so good.”
Bought back by breeder JOHN CAREY for $19,000 from last year’s CTHS Ontario yearling sale, Souper Survivor is from the mare Bear’s Kitty Kitty, by Rockport Harbor. Bear’s Kitty Kitty won six of 18 races and over $169,000. She has produced three other foals to race including stakes-placed Forest Survivor and winner Kitty’sspeedystarr.
Souper Survivor collected more than $64,000 for the win and he has earned $114,000 in his three races.
A few races later, the Victorian Queen Stakes was a bit more dramatic as race favourite SARAYU veered inwards soon after the start and lost jockey Pietro Moran, ran loose and caused fillies to get into trouble and to go too fast on the pace.
The one who benefitted from all of that was longshot STUNNINGLY PERFECT, who was actually purchased by Racing Canada, owners of Souper Survivor, for $2,500 at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton October sale. The 7-to-1 chance had shown promise in workouts before she was second in her debut. Following that race she was bought by Robert Marzilli’s Zilli Racing Stable. At 1-to-5 in her second race, she won by 7 1/4 lengths.
In the Victorian Queen, Stunningly Perfect and jockey Jose Campos were well off the hot pace set by Awesome Grace. Champagne Sunday was also going quickly chasing in second and that pair faded as Stunningly Perfect went to the lead and won by a measured 1 1/2 lengths over a closing Princess Orlaith. The time for 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:17.81.
Stunningly Perfect, trained by Steven Chircop, is by Perfect Timber from the mare Uncle’s Gem by Uncle Mo. Bred by Charles Fipke, Stunningly Perfect is the second foal of the winning mare. The third dam of Stunningly Perfect is Sweet and Careless, dam of Grade 1 Alabama Stakes winner Careless Jewel.
