The calm after the Woodbine Mile weekend storm means some nice racing at Woodbine this weekend with light stakes action.

Eurico Rosa da Silva, fresh off his remarkable win on El Tormenta to win the Woodbine Mile (g1) holds a three-win lead in the jockey standings heading into Friday’s card.

Saturday’s VICTORIAN QUEEN STAKES at 6 furlongs for Ontario sired 2-year-old fillies is the next appearance by the speedy gal OWLETTE, the Kentucky based filly by Canada’s leading freshman sire Frac Daddy.

Owned by David Mowat’s Ten Broeck Farm in Kentucky, OWLETTE was bought by Ben McElroy for just $7,500 (US) at Keeneland September 2018. Bred by Michael C. Byrne, who stands Frac Daddy, this big gal out of the American Chance mare Itstartswithadream came to Woodbine for her second career start after finishing second in her debut at Keenland. She won that Woodbine maiden race by four lengths and then came off a layoff to win the Shady Well Stakes in July. The third place finisher in the Shady Well is the American-sired Curlin’s Voyage, who came back to win a nice maiden allowance race.

Owlette

Owlette is named after a character from the kid’s show PJ Masks which is about superheroes. She has had four workouts since the Shady Well and Patrick Husbands rides again for trainer Wesley Ward.

The main competition for Owlette could be SHE’S A DREAM, owned by Di Scola Boys and trained by Josie Carroll. This gal by Silent Name (Jpn) is a half sister to graded stakes winner Paladin Bay. She won her debut in smart fashion before a bit of an awkward trip when third in the Muskoka Stakes. She’s a Dream was bred by Ericka Rusnak.

Also Saturday is the Sweet Briar Too Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta. Mike Sisk’s SPECIAL RELATIVITY, recent third in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Ballerina, has come north to Norm McKnight to try an all weather surface for the first time. David Cohen is her regular rider.

Sunday’s pair of stakes races include the Ontario Damsel Stakes at one mile on the grass and it might be the spot in which BOLD SCRIPT can grab her first win since last year. The champion 2-year-old filly of 2018 owned and bred by Chiefswood Stable and trained by Stuart Simon has been second or third in four straight stakes races this year at Woodbine on Tapeta. She has not won since last fall but the move tot he grass, on which she won her maiden, and the easier company, should help her jump the hump.

The $100,000 Bull Page Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings, Ontario sired, has draw a field of just five with Gabe Grossberg’s homebred MEYER looking like the likely winner. This is a Singing Saint youngster out of the Malibu Moon mare Malibu Sunrise and he was second to Keep On Truckin in the Clarendon Stakes in his most recent race.
