Plenty of Canadian horsepeople are south of the border now that the Woodbine season is over, and some are already busy entering horses. Trainers JOSIE CARROLL and STEVEN CHIRCOP have Canadian-bred fillies in stakes races on December 23.
Carroll will send out three-year-olds SPEED TRAP and DOLCE SOPRESA in the $125,000 Tropical Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Gulfstream Park, race 8 on a stakes-laden card. Speed Trap, with Joe Bravo riding, will be making her first start on the grass and she comes off a win in a 7 furlong allowance/optional claiming race on Sept. 16 on the Woodbine Tapeta. Mark Dodson owns the grey daughter of Bernardini. Right beside Speed Trap in the gate is Dolce Soprea for the DiScola Boys Stable. This gal, bred by Minshall Farms, has won two turf sprints in her last three races and she was recently third in the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes at 7 furlongs on Tapeta. The daughter of Maclean’s Music will be ridden by Paco Lopez.
Both gals are up against Canada’s Champion two-year-old filly of 2022, CAIRO CONSORT, who has not raced since May but was a two-time stakes winner last winter at Gulfstream.
At Laurel Park on Saturday, LADY BREW, by Point of Entry – Ginger Brew, will start from post position 4 in the Carousel Stakes worth $100,000. The race is 1 1/8 miles on the dirt and has a field of six. Lady Brew, owned by JDLP Holdings Inc., won two consecutive races on turf and Tapeta in the fall at Woodbine and was recently 10th in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes. This will be her first attempt on a dirt track.
