The updated list of the highest winning Beyer Speed Figures from Canada last week (to include Sunday July 12) added two new names from Monday’s news: PIONEER MAN and RED HIERARCHY.
The latter was a first-time starter for Norseman Racing and trainer Jamie Attard, showing workouts in Florida and then some speedier times at Woodbine. Ridden by Justin Stein, this chestnut gelded son of Ontario sire Signature Red – Majestic Red by Rahy broke well, stayed just off the early pace and then cruised to a 6-length win under a hand ride in 1:16.14 for 6 1/2 furlongs. That was an 83 Beyer, quite hefty for a beginner.
Majestic Red, the dam, was unplaced in 4 races and has had 2 winners from 2 other starters. The mare is a half sister to Norseman’s champion 2-year-old Maritimer.
SIGNATURE RED has made a mark as a sire of many debut winners and speedy sorts. He had two very good juveniles in 2019 in Red Giveaway and Dotted Line.
More Sunday:
HARDY CANDY won race 1, caught Blessed Two to win this $7,000 claiming race for non-winners of 2. The winner is a Paul Buttigieg homebred by Sidney’s Candy and Daisuke Fukomoto rode.
BIG MAMBA was a logical winner of race 2 for $15,000 claiming. The race was taken off the grass after downpours off and on for the previous two days. This was a non-winners of 2 and this Colonel John mare was winning for the first time for current owners Michael Lay and D Mac Racing, trainer Don MacRae.
Patrick Husbands rode.
Race 3 was a 2-year-old race that stayed on the inner turf at 5 furlongs and the only guy in the field with a race, READY TO REPEAT blitzed the competition with a fascinating show of speed – 21.37, 43.95 and a final time of 55.70 for a 72 Beyer Figure.
This guy, 2nd in his debut to Lion of the Sea (Reload) was a $60,000 purchase at Keeneland September 2019 and this Kentucky-bred by More Than ready is owned by Gail Cox, John Menary, Mike Ambler and Windways Farm. Gail Cox trains and Luis Contreras rode.
Race 4, a maiden, optional claiming race at 6 1/2 furlongs was essentially a match race between Overheath Stables’ EXECUTIVE SEARCH and Ryan Kerbel and Howard Rubin’s BOKERMIN. The two battled early and through the stretch, exchanged bumps and Executive Search edged away but was later disqualified to second. Bokermin, a 4-year-old by Morning Line, was the first winner of the season for Denyse McClachrie and the gelding broke through in his 11th start following 7 previous top three placing. Justin Stein was on the official winner.
Well-bred HEAVENLY CURLIN, a $675,0000 yearling purchase owned by Gary Barber, won race 5 at 7 to 1, quite good odds on this Curlin gal who had a terrible trip in her debut on turf in December and was making her Tapeta debut for trainer Mark Casse. Kazushi Kimura rode the winner.
Race 6 was off the turf and run at 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta for non-winners of, $15,000 and the very pretty liver chestnut SANDY BAY streaked to a big win in his first race since December 2018. The son of Animal Kingdom, owned by TEC Racing and trainer by Martin Drexler had won a maiden allowance in 2018 for trainer Catherine Day Phillips with a 75 Beyer Figure.
This guy’s time of 1:16.75 (1:16 3/5) was a 69 Beyer Figure. Bokermin received a 71 Beyer for 1`:16.72 and Red Hierarchy 83 for 1:16.14.
Hopefield Farm’s homebred A BROKEN BREEZE rocketed to victory in race 7, a non-winners of 2 allowance, going past favoured Preferred Guest. The winner was yet another winner by Dausike Fukumoto and Alec McPherson is off to a good start. The winner is by Broken Vow.
The Mark Casse barn has a nice 4-year-old in PIONEER MAN, a John Oxley homebred who won race 9 at 9 furlongs, thanks in part to a super ride by Rafael Hernandez. The Pioneerof the Nile colt is now 3 for 5 and won his season opener upsetting graded stakes placed Dream Maker, also owned by Oxley.
William Thompson Jr.’s ROYAL WEDDING and her trainer Nathan Squires had a big payday in race 10, a $103,000 allowance on turf at 1 1/16 miles. This Ontario by by Court Vision, bought for just $15,000 at the local sale got the jump on her rivals under Leo Salles and hung on to win over a very troubled TAPPITY TAPPITY. Royal Wedding, previously trained by the late Laurie Silvera, picked up a whopping $60,000 (Can) for the win. Her earnings from 2 wins in 14 starts is almost $120,000 US.
The last race, another maiden event, was off to a bad start when Society’s Story veered in coming out of the chute and jumped the railing, tossing jockey Darryl Holland to the dirt. Holland was reported to be okay but there was no word on Society’s Story who was vanned off.
Winning the 6 1/2 furlong race in 1:17.32 was TWIRLING FAITH, a Kentucky-bred filly for Dewberry Thoroughbreds and trainer Josie Carroll. Luis Contreras rode.
**ON THE TAB – There will be some very interesting first-time starters coming up at the races at Woodbine soon including the sales toppers from the last two CTHS Ontario yearling sales.
BOURBONTRAIGHTUP, bought for $125,000 at the 2018 Canadian Premier Yearling Sale by Michael Lay and La Huerta Racing, trained by Don MacRae, has returned to the worktab this year. The Old Forester – Dicey Girl filly shows 5 workouts this year including a July 12 move in 1:00.60.

The 3-year-old CANADIAN PHAROAH, once a $310,000 yearling purchase from breeder Christine Hayden, was bought privately from previous owner Zayat Stables by Nick Nosowenko. The attractive chestnut out of the mare Gloat was recently supplemented to the Canadian Triple Crown and is nearing his career debut.
